URBAN VILLAGE ON DISPLAY, PRESERVATION OF THE URBAN FOOTPRINT: BAISHIZHOU PERFORMING ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTER by Atitaya Taratai

Baishizhou performing arts and cultural center is a performance space with a public space  for both tourists and Baishizhou locals. The project aims to display and preserve the footprint of the oldest urban village in Shenzhen by bringing tourists into the site to experience the uniqueness of this area as a new tourist attraction of Shenzhen. The materials that are used in the building and also the combination of the existing building and the new intervention create an ironic way to preserve Baishizhou urban village.

Performance Space Project Manifesto by Atitaya Taratai

Baishizhou is one of the biggest and "oldest" historical urban villages in Shenzhen. The history of Baishizhou is filled with political and economical factors that affect the development process of Baishizhou, making this area different from other part of Shenzhen. The diversity and self-sufficiency of the community creates uniqueness, standing out from other parts of Shenzhen.

Shenzhen is a developing city and one of the most rapidly developed cities in China. The political and development plans are factors that affect the people and footprint of Baishizhou urban village. The government and the developers who propose redevelopment plans for this area see the potential of this area where they can make large profit on its real estate. The oldest and biggest urban village will gradually disappear, given these factors.

The idea of bringing tourists and visitors into the area is a tool to generate income for the urban village; a way to preserve and also enhance the urban village by designing a building that considers both preservation of the footprint and retention of the daily life activities of Baishizhou locals.

Different Viewport, Different Visual Perception : Redefining Performance By Atitaya Taratai

Because the different seating designs of theatres or stadiums create different viewports, the audiences perceive different visual perceptions from different viewports.
I experimented with different viewports by positioning the performers into a pattern. These diagrams show the rotation of each viewport.

Shenzhen Site Analysis: Bai Shi Zhou, By Atitaya Taratai and Patlapa Davivongsa

Bai Shi Zhou is where the largest urban village in Shenzhen is located. It is divided into 3 zones: the developed zone,  the urban village zone, and the Window of the World zone.

Overall changes in Baishizhou, Shenzhen

Timeline of population in the urban village from the past until now, which affects the building typologies and the growth of the urban village

The development in transportation also affect the growth of the urban village.
The "kissing buildings" or "handshake buildings" in sections and the transition of the building scale in this area
Because of this, very clear boundaries divided Bai Shi Zhou into 3 different zones.
Here are some possible solutions to solve the problem of overpopulation and poor living conditions in Bai Shi Zhou.

The ideas of redevelopment and the constraints

Performance Space Precedents, by Atitaya Taratai

The 6 precedents that I analyzed under different scales from bigger to smaller :
urban scale context, programs, theatre or auditorium scale

CASA DA MUSICA
urban : how urban pattern related to the form of the building
programs : primary program is at the center of the building and the remaining
space  as a secondary programs
auditorium : the visual connection

the concept of using glass volume to show the idea of gathering
programs together that can explain from the exterior the hierarchy
and relation between space and function

the building base on the concept of stages not only the auditorium
inside but also the outdoor stage at the huge plaza at the river front

this precedent show how building interact with the bigness of the city
and context

transformation of the stage without using mechanical system
but using modular system design

Perfermances which held in the arena are the performance that give audience
more than one perspective eg. gladiator sport competition etc.
different from theatre perspective.
