SZCT: SHENZHEN CENTRAL THEATER, OCT LOFT by Suarpha Vangvasu

According to the site analysis of OCT LOFT, the two main users in this area are locals and OCT LOFT users. Both do not have any relationship with each other, as the function for each user is very specific. This performance space project, located in the OCT LOFT area, tries to integrate these two users together to make a more democratic community space for OCT LOFT.

The main point of this project is to make every user think that this space belongs to them; a place where they can enjoy themselves. From the site analysis, locals always use empty space as a recreational and communal space. So I deleted intimidated function and space inside the project by combining formal and informal spaces together.

The target user for this performance space is the tourist, the OCT LOFT user and the local. Different users will use this performance space differently according to their style. Ultimately, different types of people in this area will become gradually integrated and familiar to each other, and finally OCT LOFT will be a more united community.

Manifesto of performance space by Suarpha Vangvasu

OCT Loft is located in Shenzhen OCT as the original eastern industrial zone. The area is roughly about 150,000 square meters, with a construction area of 200,000 square meters, and is divided into north and south sides. Since 2004,  the latter half of OCT Loft was established through a transformation of industrial buildings to be a creative industry park. Old buildings were reconstructed for creative industry workshops, and the introduction of various types of creative industries.

The result of renovation of the loft, increased land value and attracted many new high-class residential developments.

Besides the development of OCT Loft, there is still the local community that has developed, from past up to present, their own facilities and services without any relevance to the Loft. Community facilities consist of schools, food storage, canteens and other human needs.

Umbrella performance : Redefining Performance By Suarpha Vangvasu

A different arrangement of stage and seating in each precedent study made me think of the question of "What is performance?" As all the case studies were called Performance spaces, there is some intersection between these kind of buildings.

1. A stage in performance space
2. A constraint of plot that the performer has to follow
3. Relationship between two major groups of people: audience and performer. The relationship is an action and reaction between one other that sometime produces an 'unexpected situation'

So this redefining performance concept is to create a metaphor of the 'fundamentals of performance' and to show the relationship between audience and performer. Below is the diagram showing the list of 'fundamentals of performance', performance plan and elevation, and the experimental video.
