THE REVOLUTIONARY ART THEATRE OF SHENZHEN by Ekkrit Suwanwong

The Revolutionary Art Theatre of Shenzhen is a performance space designed to represent the national icon of Shenzhen and China. The concept is based from the research of the national context and the patterns of Shenzhen's current development, which is based on the governmental policy in social and economic reform called "SEZ" (Special Economic Zone).

Using the national performing art piece, "The Red Detachment of Women" (1964), to design the cultural space, it is a strong, communicative piece that commemorates the idea of national prosperity and growth in modern day of China-- in which the plot of the performance is adapted to contemporary context. The storyline of the performance highlights the social aspect of migrants who seek opportunity for new change in life in the newly-built city. The re-adapted performance is an important medium that will make connection between audiences and the context of Shenzhen city.

The design of the theater is a transformative architecture which plays its role in parts of the performance. The curtain walls surrounding the performing stage highlight and capture the city backdrop in the finale of the show. The performing stage and the viewing spaces are totally redefined and make powerful, influential experiences to all audiences.

Manifesto for Performance Space Design, by Ekkrit Suwanwong

Manifesto for a Design Proposal (Version 2)

The area of Cai Wu Wei and the city of Shenzhen are in parallel development through the urban history of physical and political change. Cei Wu Wei is one of the original locations of urban villages that accommodates new migrants in the city, since the time that Shenzhen began to develop. Today, the area is active 24hrs, serving daily activities of both inhabitants in the village, and visitors who come for public leisure and utility. Thus, this specific space is a local and vibrant part of what is now Shenzhen's financial district.

The initiation of a cultural and performance space specific to the site of Cei Wu Wei is inspired by the cultural, political and physical changes analyzed in Shenzhen. As the originating point, the space will act as a statement of cultural identity of Shenzhen through the doctrine of the contemporary situations of social and economic transformation of Shenzhen, and China as a whole.

The process of thinking requires a selection of performance to become a guideline statement and uses it as a communication tool to evoke public audiences. The theatre should stand as a cultural representation and monument to the storyline of Shenzhen's transformation.

Out of the varied art forms of China from the ancient to the contemporary, each individually cultivates experiences of the nation's stand through the expressions from dramatic acts, dance movement, music, verses and atmospheric scenes which in total create the successful and influential performance.

'The Red Detachment of Women' is one of the national pieces from the Communist Cultural era and is a model of a historic-contemporary theatrical ballet that speaks from a nationalistic viewpoint. Ironically and ambiguously, its content also corresponds to the situation of the political ownership of lands specific to the land of Cei Wu Wei, which awaits another page of transformation, which will or will not have impacts to the urban and social activity changes in the area. This performance will bear the message to public audiences to understand the contemporary change to their neighborhood and also provide education to the historical and contemporary change in these modern times of living in one of the fast growing cities in China.

In this proposal, the performance space will act as public theatrical venue that will hold the adapted performance of 'The Red Detachment of Women'  in the contemporary context of Shenzhen. The main performance will act as the city's signature piece to speak for its original cultural beliefs regarding the social and political orders, in comparison to modern-day existing conditions, which are still ambiguous. This cultural and performance space will hold experimental theatrical spaces to open opportunities for other local and international performance artists to participate in the collaboration of creative expression of the social and political situations, nationally and globally. The venue will also activate through its vibrant livelihood of public venues and facilities; cafes, restaurants, shops that cohesively link the surrounding exuberant urban developments.

Virtual Stereoscopic Display: Redefining Performance, by Ekkrit Suwanwong

I redefined the concept of "visual performance", based on the studies of precedents of performance spaces, including traditional theaters, concert halls, musical auditoriums, etc. (Specific precedents are referred in Phase 1 - Performance Space Precedents)

Virtual Stereoscopic Display

It is an experimental design that attempts to break away from the traditional way of audience interaction within performance spaces. This Virtual Stereoscopic Display involves the audience's interaction via dynamic positions and stereoscopic visuals through red-cyan 3D glasses, in order to perceive the total performance that is being displayed virtually in the center. Consequently, by visual performance, audiences will develop their visual perception and the total experience of the whole performance through 2D anaglyph images representing the content of the performance.

Redefined 'stereoscopic station' for viewing the performance displayed (as in an object form)

Documentation

On 25th February 2014 was the presentation day in which I have documented a space performing itself with the audiences who are interacting with the design space.

Shenzhen Site Analysis: Cei Wu Wei - Urban Village, By Ekkrit Suwanwong and Smith Wararatchai

Cei Wu Wei - is a portion of urban village in the Luoho district of Shenzhen urban area. It is an area with historical background as an urban village, which is the residential community of migrants existing parallel to the area being developed as the main 'financial' district of the city. The timeline presents the swiftly changing transformation of the area.

4. 1950 - the development has moved with the new governmental office settlement from the west district 'Bao an', resulting the extension of avenue to the Cei Wu Wei area

5. West to East - a strategic relocation of neighboring Hongkong Border

6. and 7.  During the settlement of financial district, local farmland owner turns their lands into residential units, resulting in urban villages formation and creating
'Handshake Building', (overlapping units adjacent)

8. 1980 - Migration of 'Hukou' or the local official population causes the increase of population size

11. and 12. Specific architecture is built to represent as an iconic piece which has economic, political and social impacts to the modern society of Shenzhen

13. and 14.  at Present day- zones of space are transformed in which residential/local commercial zone are invading by the 'new' or official financial district, and resulting the contrast of urban planning and the social effects

From the study, we have come up with the further questions to the Cei Wu Wei area. With possible changes in the future, the conflict between the 'residential' and 'financial district'  zones would be the cause of change in both social trends and urban fabric.

Performance Space Precedents, Ekkrit Suwanwong

The set of these 6 precedents of performance architecture are  comparatively analyzed  by the evolution of ‘theatre’ space in which starts from the classical amphitheater to the contemporary  projection space. The representations of each space design conform to the changing context of time and culture in different eras.  Due to this change, the language of performance architecture has interactively impacted to the roles between performers and audiences, in which create total new experiences in perceiving performances.

The selected precedents are Teatro Olimpico, Bolshoi Theatre, Bayreuth Festival House, Prometeo Musical Space, Philips Pavilion and Prometeo Hall at AIAV.
