THE INDUSTRIAL PERFORMANCE : Shekou Performing Arts and Cultural Center by Bunyawat Thannipat

The Industrial Performance is a public ice factory and cultural center that intends to highlight the post-industrial patterns of the Shekou area to the public. The concept of this project is to re-develop this existing industrial area in Nanshan district, known as Fisherman’s Pier, by combining two different programs that are not usually found together: industry and performance. The audience will be able to witness ice-making processes as well as experience changes in temperature, noise and atmosphere according to the programmatic sequence. The project also aims to create interaction between tourists, locals and industrial spaces by providing the central fish market and the dramatic theater. In conclusion, the Industrial Performance project is imagined to develop the surrounding areas, while exposing the patterns of Shekou and Fisherman’s Pier to the public.

Manifesto for Performance Space Design, by Bunyawat Thannipat

The concept of this project is to renovate an industrial space in Shekou (specifically the fish market) into a cultural space that still preserves the existing atmosphere of the industrial processes. According to site studies, Shekou is a district that is now renovating existing industrial spaces and developing them into public cultural spaces, which creates a sense of the combination of industrial and cultural.

The cultural center will consist of a main hall, theatre, gallery, exhibition area and also combine the existing ice factory and fish market to preserve the fish market area as well. People will also be able to experience how the ice factory and fish market system work as they walk around the cultural center. Each circulation path within the cultural center will have a difference sequence of experiencing sound, materiality, and performance and it will give a sense of the development pattern of Shekou.

Phase03 : Redefining Performance By Bunyawat Thannipat

The Light Extraction

According to Phase One, light is the main part to create performance and control audience viewpoint. Therefore, I extracted the concept of light to create a performance in which the contrast of light color makes each performer become priority in different times of the performance, while also controlling the performer's movement in space.
