SZCT: SHENZHEN CENTRAL THEATER, OCT LOFT by Suarpha Vangvasu

According to the site analysis of OCT LOFT, the two main users in this area are locals and OCT LOFT users. Both do not have any relationship with each other, as the function for each user is very specific. This performance space project, located in the OCT LOFT area, tries to integrate these two users together to make a more democratic community space for OCT LOFT.

The main point of this project is to make every user think that this space belongs to them; a place where they can enjoy themselves. From the site analysis, locals always use empty space as a recreational and communal space. So I deleted intimidated function and space inside the project by combining formal and informal spaces together.

The target user for this performance space is the tourist, the OCT LOFT user and the local. Different users will use this performance space differently according to their style. Ultimately, different types of people in this area will become gradually integrated and familiar to each other, and finally OCT LOFT will be a more united community.

THE INDUSTRIAL PERFORMANCE : Shekou Performing Arts and Cultural Center by Bunyawat Thannipat

The Industrial Performance is a public ice factory and cultural center that intends to highlight the post-industrial patterns of the Shekou area to the public. The concept of this project is to re-develop this existing industrial area in Nanshan district, known as Fisherman’s Pier, by combining two different programs that are not usually found together: industry and performance. The audience will be able to witness ice-making processes as well as experience changes in temperature, noise and atmosphere according to the programmatic sequence. The project also aims to create interaction between tourists, locals and industrial spaces by providing the central fish market and the dramatic theater. In conclusion, the Industrial Performance project is imagined to develop the surrounding areas, while exposing the patterns of Shekou and Fisherman’s Pier to the public.

MOSAIC : Caiwuwei Performing Arts and Cultural Center by Smith Wararatchai

MOSAIC represents the patchwork of varieties of life, culture, and style of people throughout the history of Shenzhen. The design of the building was generated through the existing historical village buildings' footprints to preserve the sense of history of the Luohu District.

The iconic vertical concert hall is a breakdown of the traditional orchestral arrangement, challenging the common sightline in a performance as well as creating a vertical acoustic experience for the audience. MOSAIC does not only aim to represent modern day Shenzhen, but also poses a future for the development of music composition for such vertical performance space.

SHENZHEN PERFORMING ARTS PLATORMS by Samascha Samcharoen

On an urban scale, Shenzhen is a commuter city where people tend to rely on vehicles as a means of transportation.  Unlike most other places in Shenzhen, the district of OCT was designed to accommodate the walkability of pedestrians throughout the area.  With this privilege, along with the invisible boundaries that separate the two sub-districts of OCT, my design proposal embarks upon creating layers and networks of existing pedestrians footprints that physically and programmatically bring interactions between the two disconnected contexts.  Furthermore, the design itself is a transformative platform that merges the segregated urban layers into an interdependent performance architecture that dually serves as a concert hall during events and also as recreational space.  The design is also considered to be an urban stage where, according to the redefinition of performance, boundaries between performer and audience is blurred, and everyone in the space is considered to have their own role as either audience or performer.  The space is activated by humans as an input to the architecture.
